Red Kettle Campaign serves those in need
“We’re preparing for 600, but if we need to do more, we’ll do more”, said Lena Parker, Thanksgiving coordinator.
“Many different organizations help to donate the pumpkin pies, the turkey, the stuffing, the trimmings, everything that’s provided by for this day come from our generous community”, Chamness said.
Jim Edmonds said the Thanksgiving meal is a partnership between the Salvation Army and BSMS students, who do a terrific job. It will be a great festive occasion and we’d love to see you there.
The holiday season comes with an unmistakable sound. For some, there is a basic struggle to get food on the table, much less presents under the Christmas tree, if there is one.
Monday through Friday the Salvation Army serves breakfast and lunch.
The Salvation Army delivered food to the Abilene Police and Fire Departments on Thursday as well.
Bell ringers outside 17 stores across the county are out collecting money.
Poe says they are always looking for volunteers.
It is a tradition the Salvation Army makes possible each Thanksgiving Day. “What we raise during these six weeks of the Red Kettle campaign goes to support the operations of the Salvation Army of Monroe County throughout the entire year”.
One of the family members says how the Thanksgiving meal helped her and her family.
It all started in 1891, when Salvation Army Captain, at the time, Joseph McFee wanted to give the poor in San Francisco a Christmas dinner. We asked the community to donate and bring their donations.
“The funds raised during the campaign are used for the charity’s Christmas programs, but also helps fund them for the rest of the year”.
