Red Sox closer Uehara out for season

It’s a spectacular performance for any reliever and especially so for a 40-year-old who came into the season with plenty of questions marks attached after he struggled down the stretch in 2014.

Hanley Ramirez’s first season with the Boston Red Sox hasn’t gone the way anyone planned. He is under contract for $9 million next season, so it’s not like Boston lost an impending free agent to an injury.

The Red Sox have plenty of internal closer options, including Junichi Tazawa, Jean Machi, Alexi Ogando, and Ryan Cook. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia is still out of commission and is sitting pretty on the disabled list with a strained hamstring (right). Boston outfielder Mookie Betts is expected to rejoin the lineup after missing 11 games because of a concussion.

On the fifth pitch of the at-bat, Ian Kinsler ripped a line drive back up the middle.

Wright gave up two runs while striking out eight in seven frames of an 8-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on July 30. 189 in 11 games in his major-league debut.

The waiver trade deadline is on August 31 though teams can still make trade waivers after. He can’t put pressure on the foot when he swings.

But the injury serves to highlight a bigger problem: the current poor state of the Red Sox’ bullpen, and their lack of a logical replacement for Uehara, who will turn 41 next April. Barnes showed himself to be not ready for such a role, tagged for six homers in 22 1/3 innings, compiling a 5.64 ERA.
