Red Sox fan recovering after hit by foul ball at Fenway
Rob Refsnyder had the first two of his career, the second a two-run homer that turned out to be the difference in the New York Yankees’ 8-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Sitting at the bottom of the American League East, Boston is surging toward a challenge for the division, winning 10 of their last 14 games. After having a decent 2013 campaign for the Boston Red Sox, he chose to hold out until May of 2014 to receive a one-year, $10 million deal. He gave up two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings against Oakland and has allowed just six runs over his last four starts. Buchholz said he first noticed discomfort in his elbow while pitching to Brett Gardner in the third inning.
A decade ago, the Yankees decided their second base situation was untenable, so they made a brash move by replacing veteran Tony Womack with an unproven prospect named Robinson Cano. The Bats posted eleven hits and walked twice with Hanley Ramirez leaving the yard and driving in two with Mookie Betts tripling in a run and scoring while Alejandro De Aza crossed the plate twice.
“It was a big win”, said manager John Farrell.
After a pedestrian first inning and an empty threat in the home second, it took the Red Sox until the third to break through in the run column against Yankees starter Ivan Nova. Ramirez (2-for-4) hit his 19th home run of the season and drove in his team-leading 44th and 45th RBIs on the 1-0 fastball he sent to right center to give them a 3-1 lead.
Ellsbury pulled the Yankees within a run in the sixth, taking Rodriguez deep to center field, the ball falling just inside the wall of the Boston bullpen in the triangle area for his second home run of the season.
Catcher John Ryan Murphy, who has known Refsnyder since he was drafted, showed him around Fenway Park before batting practice. “The first one kind of settled me down”. Buchholz is 7-7 with a 3.26 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 18 starts in 2015. Sadly, they got the tying run on in the ninth with a two-out double by Chris Young, but Brian McCann’s towering fly ball went to no man’s land and was caught in that dreaded triangle by Betts.
Boston tied it 1-1 in the third, then Ortiz singled to lead off the fourth and Ramirez homered to make it 3-1.
“I wasn’t nervous at all”, he joked. LHP Brian Johnson was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket. Each of the slugger’s last three long balls have given the Red Sox a lead, as well as four of his last five and five of his last seven.
Nova set the Red Sox down in order in the first and got out of a jam in the second. Nathan Eovaldi will take the hill against Wade Miley.
