Red Sox lose to White Sox in Buchholz’s return to rotation

The Chicago White Sox knocked off the Boston Red Sox 3-1 in style as Chris Sale was at his brilliant best again in Major League Baseball on Tuesday.

Uehara entered the game with a two-run lead in the eighth and appeared to have no feel for his signature split-fingered fastball, leaving three of them over the plate, two of which were crushed out of the ballpark for home runs as the White Sox stormed back for an 8-6 win at Fenway Park.

“I think if you look throughout my career, there are times that I struggled”, Uehara said through an interpreter. “I don’t think it’s anything unusual; I’m going to work out of this”.

Boston’s third straight loss – each by two runs – has the club feeling the frustration. Boston was still in second place in the AL East with more than half a season still to go.

Hanley Ramirez, dropped to seventh in Boston’s batting order, snapped a 4-4 tie with a solo homer in the sixth, and Xander Bogaerts drove in his third run of the game later in the inning.

What is inexcusable is Boston putting up just four hits against the White Sox’ Miguel Gonzalez (seven earned runs in 3.1 innings in his previous start against the Detroit Tigers) while going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position on Monday.

Zach Duke, two nights after escaping a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam, pitched the ninth for his first save. Clay Buchholz (3-7) returned to Boston’s rotation after spending about a month in the bullpen.

INDIANS 6, RAYS 0 (at Cleveland) – Corey Kluber tossed a three-hitter as Cleveland won its fifth straight game. Red 1-2. Unfortunately Buchholz gave that run right back in the top of the 4th when he gave up another solo home run, this time to Frazier.

– Heath Hembree retired two of the three batters he faced and allowed a leadoff single in the ninth. But staked to a 2-0 lead through 2 1/2 innings Wednesday, he gave up four runs in the third. Red Sox: Utility player Brock Holt (concussion) had a planned day off in his rehab stint with Triple-A Pawtucket after playing two consecutive games….

Shaw is considered day-to-day with a shin contusion after he fouled a ball off his leg on Tuesday.

Quintana allowed a season-high six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, but the Sox fought through it to earn an 8-6 victory over the Red Sox.
