Red Sox rock Felix, Mariners to the bone
The most recent 10-game stretch for the Red Sox has gone great. T.Shaw flied out to left fielder Gutierrez. And so it was that the Red Sox found themselves far behind for the first time this weekend having gone scoreless in the first two frames. Mookie Betts has also had an excellent rookie campaign, and Hanley Ramirez has been a wonderful addition to their lineup. “I mean, I was open to anything”.
At points, it appeared as if the Red Sox would complete a task for the first time all season – win when trailing after 8 innings.
Of course, it has worked out well for Cruz with the Mariners. During that same span, his earned run average has increased almost a run from 2.69 to 3.65. 321 and his OPS at a cool 1.000. A one-out double by Francisco Lindor in the sixth was the only hit Duffey (1-1) permitted before leaving at the end of the inning. Mike Zunino and Austin Jackson also homered.
The Seattle Mariners beat the Boston Red Sox by a score of 10-8 on Sunday at Fenway Park in one of the most annoying games in a season full of annoying games. “Actually, two pitches to Adam Jones”, McClendon said.
Kyle Seager, mired in an 0-for-26 skid with runners in scoring position, tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single later in the inning.
The Mariners tried to answer the scoring outburst, by getting two runs in the third off Boston starter Wade Miley.
“I was trying”, he said. “It’s good to get these first two out of the way, and the first zone, set my shoulders back, take a deep breath and move on”. “You take the same approach as in any other situation, and everything will work out the way it should”.
-LF Franklin Gutierrez recorded his second career multi-homer game and drove in four runs Sunday.
He then ripped his third double of the afternoon, a two-RBI blast off of reliever Rob Rasmussen, in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Boston a 17-2 lead, following that up with his fourth home run of the season in the eighth inning, a 425-foot shot to right field off of reliever Jesus Sucre, giving the Red Sox a 22-6 advantage. In fact, 10 of those runs came directly off Hernandez in his 2 1/3 innings.
“He just had a clunker”, McClendon said.
He added: “I’m just excited to get back out there in five days”.
Right fielder Nelson Cruz hit a two-run home run and had three RBIs to lead Seattle (54-63), which has been outscored by 25 runs in the series.
It has been a struggle all year for the Red Sox, but an announcement Friday served as a powerful reminder that these games we love to watch and cover are never really that serious. Cruz is batting. 321 (143-for-445) with 74 RBIs over 115 games.
Mariners: LHP James Paxton, on the DL since late May with a strained left middle finger, threw a bullpen session on Saturday.
Interim Boston manager Torey Lovullo said the team will make bullpen coach Dana LeVangie the bench coach today. Furbush has been on the disabled list since July 9 (retroactive to July 8) and has not pitched in a game since July 7.
1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 0 left on. Coming off the Sox’ 22-10 drubbing of Cy Young Award victor “King” Felix Hernandez, Nuno certainly will be wary when he toes the bump Sunday.
