Red Sox Sign Pitcher David Price
Price heads to his third AL East team after stints in Tampa and Toronto, and is the owner of a lifetime 3.09 ERA in eight major-league seasons with the Rays (2008-14), Tigers (2014-15) and Blue Jays (2015). The five-time All-Star has an opt-out after three years with no deferred money.
Could the Yankees see what the Red Sox have done and decide Chen and/or Samardzija – coming off a brutal year – are needed to improve a rotation loaded with health questions?
The Red Sox agreed to a multi-year deal with outfielder Chris Young on Monday, pending a physical, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. He’s never won in the postseason as he’s recorded a 2-7 record with a 5.12 ERA (although Randy Johnson had that same record entering the 2001 playoffs with the Diamondbacks and he went 5-1 in leading Arizona to a WS title).
Since hitting the free agent market, Price has been one of the most sought after players from several teams around the league. But it’s very likely to look very good in the short term, because the Red Sox added something much scarcer than dollars or even rotation or roster spots.
Dombrowski has a trade piece in Hanley Ramírez to address some of the remaining holes in the roster, but the Sox are in win-now mode after spending a record amount on Price, whom Dombrowski hopes is the first of his long-term investments to maintain value for the duration of the contract. There are still moves left to be made to help push the Boston Red Sox over the top, but every fan will join Price in sleeping easy tonight with a big smile on their face. In fact, the Red Sox have given Price the largest contract ever to a pitcher. The lack of an established ace at the top of the rotation was the most glaring hole on the Red Sox roster, and it is now in-arguably solidified.
One of Boston’s biggest motives this offseason was to acquire an ace for their “ace-less” staff. Not only did they do that, but they picked up the best pitcher in the market, more than making up for their terrible pitching performance in 2015.
David Price has a new home for 2016 and beyond.
Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman posted a lengthy goodbye message to Price on his Instagram account along with a photo of the two pitchers Tuesday night. He went 18-5 with a 2.45 ERA in 2015, striking out 225. The Red Sox tried to reacquire Lester as a free agent prior to last season, but he ultimately signed with the Cubs. The team has been linked to starting pitchers Tyson Ross of the San Diego Padres and Shelby Miller of the Atlanta Braves.
