Red Sox slugger joins the 500 home run club
Ortiz becomes the 27th player to join the 500-home run club and the first since Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols hit the key number in 2014. Ortiz has hit 46 homers against the Rays in his career, including two against Chris Archer, so I am fully expecting to see Big Papi hit that milestone sometime in this series.
-Ortiz moved into a tie for 19th on the all-time doubles list with his RBI two-bagger in the first inning. Even with three championships, one where Big Papi put his younger teammates on his back and took them to the promise land essentially single-handed, baseball people have questioned whether a designated hitter deserves the honor. Ortiz is the 27th Major League Baseball player to achieve this feat.
Ortiz was lifted for a pinch runner in the seventh after flaring a single to center for his third hit in four at-bats.
It happened in the fifth inning, again off Moore.
The Dominican’s 34th home run of the season gave the Red Sox an 8-0 lead. Toronto said Tulowitzki will be monitored for the next week for the Blue Jays to determine a timetable for his return.
Rick Porcello (8-12) got the win after allowing three runs and five hits in seven innings. He struck out 10, walked one and hit two batters during a 109-pitch outing.
Hill almost left the game after seven with a no-hitter. Alex Rodriguez technically has the lead with 2049 RBIs; however, between admitting to using PEDs to being caught a second time, let alone the fact that most of his RBIs came while playing other positions, A-Rod should not be considered the true leader. Trevor Plouffe had two hits and an RBI for the Twins. Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford also had home runs for the Dodgers.
In San Francisco, Madison Bumgarner lost his bid for a flawless game on a single with two outs in the eighth inning, the lone blemish for the San Francisco Giants ace. Robbie Ross Jr. allowed a single in the 13th en route to his second save. The left-hander received a warm ovation from the disappointed crowd of 41,564 and then went right back to work.
The home team continued to struggle inning after inning with their pitchers and Heath Hembree came in to relieve Cook. Sox 7-0.
Pittsburgh drew within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Cardinals. Since July 1, the Mets are 25-11 on the road, best in the majors over that span. Baltimore fell to five games under.500.
In Pittsburgh, Jeff Locke pitched one-run ball into the seventh inning and Michael Morse hit a pinch-hit grand slam as the Pirates tightened up the NL Central race. He struck out 7 and walked 2 after losing consecutive starts and 4 of his last 5 decisions.
He’s 5 for 10 with a double and a home run during the regular season against Smyly (2-2, 3.59 ERA), who is 1-1 with a 2.04 ERA in his last three starts against the Red Sox.
In Seattle, Robinson Cano, Jesus Montero, Franklin Gutierrez and Nelson Cruz all homered to lead the Mariners past Colorado.
