Redblacks’ Burris named CFL’s most outstanding player
Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris was honored Thursday night as the Canadian Football League’s most outstanding player. Awards voting was conducted by 75 members of the Football Reporters of Canada.
The only way Grey Cup Week can get any better for the Ottawa Redblacks is if they trounce the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League’s championship game on Sunday and their giant-R sawblade logo gets projected in lights on the dome of the Manitoba Legislature, right beneath the Golden Boy.
Bowman led Edmonton’s receivers with 93 catches for 1,364 yards and seven touchdowns, just behind league-leader Eric Rogers from Calgary (1,448 yards). He also played for the Calgary Stampeders and BC Lions.
The other two players named were Derrell Mitchell and Rodney Harding. And it was Burris’s 93-yard TD strike to Greg Ellingson late in the fourth quarter of a 35-28 East Division final win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats that propelled the upstart Ottawa Redblacks into the Grey Cup against the Edmonton Eskimos.
Campbell’s father, Hugh, was coach of the year in 1979 with Edmonton, making the Campbells the first father-and-son winners in CFL history.
The 40-year-old quarterback was named the CFL’s outstanding player for the second time and also received the Tom Pate award for community service. “I’m always going to be grateful for that”.
“Every one of these gentlemen had a positive impact on the growth of football in our country, and for that we are forever indebted to them”, CFL commissioner Jeffrey Orridge said in a statement. But the CFL put on an impressive show of its own, albeit one only streamed live to hardcore fans. Bighill recorded a CFL- and career-high 117 tackles this season while adding four sacks, an interception and fumble recovery.
“I just want to thank the CFL and my team and coaching staff for putting me in a great position to be successful”, he said. The wide receiver racked up 1,110 yards with six TDs in only 10 starts. Toronto’s Vidal Hazelton was the finalist. Game time is 4 p.m. MST.
