Redblacks dominate CFL awards banquet
Can the 40-year-old quarterback Henry Burris get it done one more time?
Campbell was honoured Thursday at the CFL awards banquet, receiving 54-of-75 first-place ballots in voting by the Football Reporters of Canada.
The Ottawa Redblacks worked out on a field dusted in snow Wednesday, gearing up for Sunday’s Grey Cup showdown with the Edmonton Eskimos. Hazelton led all Toronto receivers with 70 catches for 803 yards and six touchdowns and looks to become the first Argo to win the award since Derrell (Mookie) Mitchell in 1997.
When the Edmonton Eskimos and the Ottawa Redblacks meet to decide the 103rd Grey Cup – the Canadian Football League’s championship game – this Sunday, they are carrying on a time-honored tradition.
Campbell’s father, Hugh, was coach of the year in 1979 with Edmonton, making the Campbells the first father-and-son winners in CFL history. He was Canadian university football’s most outstanding player in 2010, entered the CFL as a QB before converting to receiver in 2013.
Burris said his relationship with Ottawa offensive co-ordinator Jason Maas – another Hamilton quarterback who left the team than less than ideal circumstances – is significantly better than the one he had with Austin. “So, I guess I’m going to give advice more than a policy, and this would apply to our players and coaches and it mirrors our football team this year: the odds aren’t good and no one gave you much of a chance”.
“It’s hard stand up there and kind of be singled out with the team that we had”, Sinopoli said. I’m excited to get back next year and get it rolling again.
The Shaw CFL Awards show is sold out, but the awards ceremony will be streamed live at cfl.ca.
“I know our defence is better than theirs”, he said matter-of-factly. “Any time anybody gets criticized you want to try and prove people wrong, that’s just human nature”. “Good players around you can make you good in a hurry – and they went out and got some good players”.
The finalists are linebackers Adam Bighill of the B.C. Lions and Simoni Lawrence of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. “Last but not least, I want to thank my teammates”.
“It’s a pretty insane journey I’ve had. I hate getting touched and they do a great job of keeping me from being hit”.
A football team from the nation’s capital is heading to the Grey Cup for the first time since 1981, after the Ottawa Redblacks secured a 35-28 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Eastern Final.
The Ticats ultimately made a decision to let Burris leave via free agency in the off-season, electing to sign former Toronto Argonaut Zach Collaros – who’s more than a decade younger than Burris – as their starting quarterback.
“But it definitely added a chip on my shoulder, which is something I’ve always said, as an athlete, that you’re looking for to inspire you”, Burris said.
“They have a yard over us”, said Munoz, a Rutgers alumnus who plays bigger than his listing of 5-11 and 219 pounds. I don’t think that serves a great goal.
