Redblacks QB Henry Burris CFL’s most outstanding player
The Ottawa Redblacks quarterback – known as Smilin’ Hank for his relentlessly sunny disposition – used a good chunk of his 30-minute media conference in Winnipeg Wednesday to outline a series of slights he says have become a significant source of motivation heading into Sunday’s Grey Cup game against the Edmonton Eskimos.
The 40-year-old former Temple star received 71 of 75 first-place votes from the Football Reporters of Canada.
It was never more fun than it was last Sunday, when Whyte’s Eskimos defeated the defending Grey Cup champion Calgary Stampeders 45-31 in the Western Final to advance to Sunday’s big game. Henry Burris is completing 70.9 percent of his passes for 5,703 yards, 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
But his drive for success is partially fuelled by his doubters after being released by both Calgary and Hamilton in recent years.
Sinopoli won the Hec Crighton Trophy as Canadian university football’s most outstanding player in 2010 as a quarterback for the Ottawa Gee-Gees, but he was an out-of-work quarterback after the Stampeders, who had drafted him in 2011, released him following training camp a year later.
“Eddie has an outstanding motor and is relentless on every play”.
Ottawa lost both games they played this year against the Eskimos, and both games came when Edmonton was missing starting QB Mike Reilly.

“It’s been an wonderful journey for me this year on probably one of the best teams I’ve ever played for and one of the best group of guys I’ve ever played with”.
Mitchell, the MVP of last year’s Grey Cup game, enjoyed a solid season. He had coached the game so masterfully, as is his wont, while extracting a 349-yard passing performance from Masoli – who was making his third CFL start. When I have questions I know it’s somebody I can bounce ideas off of. We were always a talented team, but we needed a coach to give us direction.
“The ending was very similar to the one we had in Hamilton”, said Stoqua during the Rough Riders East Division final also against the Tiger-Cats in 1981. Said Jones “I told them, you assume when you’re young that a lot of things will happen over and over and over”.
Adam Bighill of the B.C. Lions is the CFL’s top defensive player. Bighill recorded a CFL- and career-high 121 tackles this season while adding four sacks, an interception and fumble recovery.
Banks had four punt-return TDs, one shy of the league mark. “Last but not least, I want to thank my teammates”. Reilly dealt with injuries this year and he came back to lead the Eskimos to nine straight wins and now he is going for number 10 and this is the most important of them all. “When they say certain things to doubt you”.
Toronto Argonauts receiver Vidal Hazelton was the finalist.
“I think the difference between Jason and Kent is that Jason and I have a level of respect for each other”, Burris said.
