Reds overpower Tigers in biggest comeback win of season
Farmer pitched 5 1/3 innings of three-run ball for the Detroit Tigers, but the host Cincinnati Reds used a 10-run sixth to defeat Detroit 12-5 Monday in a make-up game at Great American Ballpark. Ian Kinsler scored the first run from first base on Miguel Cabrera’s single to deep right. And after Neftali Feliz retired the first batter he faced, striking out Ivan De Jesus Jr. swinging, Skip Schumaker singled home two runs to give the Reds a 6-5 lead, then Suarez doubled home two runs, padding that lead, and after an intentional walk to Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips tripled home two runs, putting the game out of reach.
PIRATES 5, MARLINS 2: In Miami, J.A. Happ pitched six scoreless innings, extending a streak of strong starts for Pittsburgh as the Pirates won for the sixth time in seven games. He allowed three runs and three hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Two batters later, Castellanos hit his 14th home run of the season to make it 4-0.
In the makeup of a game postponed on June 18 by rain, former Detroit shortstop Eugenio Suarez homered and doubled during Cincinnati’s biggest inning since scoring 10 runs against Arizona in August 2005.
The Tigers scored 4 runs in the first that featured J.D. Martinez’s 33rd home run, a two-run shot and a solo homer by Nick Castellanos.
They weren’t raindrops, but Reds runs. Jason Bourgeois broke up his no-hit bid with a one-out single in the fifth.
Tigers: Manager Brad Ausmus isn’t anxious about designated-hitter Victor Martinez reinjuring his twice-surgically repaired knee while playing an unfamiliar position at first base as Miguel Cabrera’s backup.
“We’ve got to start winning some games”, said fellow rookie outfielder Ryan LaMarre, who collected his first major league hit Sunday.
“Now the Tigers are going through the same exact thing”, Nitkowski said. Pouring. And after right-hander Buck Farmer lost a no-hit bid an inning earlier, then a shutout bid and then the ball, it came down on the Tigers bullpen like it hasn’t come down on them this season. “A couple hits fell in…”
Right fielder Jay Bruce’s RBI double off Al Alburquerque made it a one-run game. “It was unbelievable – it was the best inning I’d ever seen”. Starter Raisel Iglesias was a tough luck loser with two runs allowed (one earned) through seven frames before Jose Rafael Diaz gave up two more. An inning later, Farmer could only watch from the bench as Cincinnati pounded out hit after hit.
“Suarez sparked us”, Reds’ manager Bryan Price said of the shortstop that got a chance at the big leagues due to an injury to Zach Cozart. His RBI double within the fourth inning marked the third time in his profession that he is recorded a number of hits in six consecutive video games.
