Reds to induct Pete Rose into team’s hall of fame
The Cincinnati Reds will induct Pete Rose into their Hall of Fame this summer.
Rose was selected as the sole inductee for the class of 2016 by the Reds Hall of Fame Board of Directors.
Late a year ago, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred denied Rose’s application to lift a lifetime ban from baseball. In rejecting Rose’s bid for reinstatement, Manfred cited his continuing gambling and the fact that he bet on the game as a player and manager for the Reds.
“I’m not going to sit here and say it’s the second best thing, because it’s not …”
Rose was honored on baseball’s “All-Century Team” in 1999 and was named one of the Reds’ “Franchise Four” at last year’s All-Star Game in Cincinnati.
Rose, 74, is baseball’s all-time hits leader, but the Cincinnati native only has winks and nods to recognize him inside Great American Ball Park.
Reds Hall of Fame induction weekend will take place June 24 – 26 as the Reds face off against the San Diego Padres.
Nicknamed “Charlie Hustle” for his aggressive style of play batting lead-off for the Reds, Rose played from 1963 to 1986 and amassed 4,256 hits, still the US major league record.
“This is the best Hall of Fame in all of baseball”. “Mr. Rose’s public and private comments, including his initial admission in 2004, provide me with little confidence that he has a mature understanding of his wrongful conduct, that he has accepted full responsibility for it, or that he understands the damage he has caused”. He’s the last of the regular starting eight fielders that also had David Concepcion, George Foster, Cesar Geronimo and Ken Griffey Sr. named to the Reds’ hall. He said any future celebrations involving Rose would be discussed first with the commissioner. He’ll make sure he has tickets for this June.
