Redskin: Refs are blowing calls because of our team name
Hatcher was frustrated following a 44-16 loss to the Panthers on Sunday.
“I know that if a team had a derogatory name for African-Americans, I would help those who helped extinguish that name”, Carey told the Washington Post. We’re National Football players.
“At the end of the day, it’s the name”. We go out there, and we sweat and work hard too.
A University at Buffalo psychologist says comments by a member of the Washington Redskins that his team’s controversial nickname is influencing the officiating in favor of the opposition could be more than a matter of post-game frustration. Don’t punish us for something we can’t control.
Hatcher suggested that in every game Washington has had calls go against them that shouldn’t have, and that it’s a constant thing. “It’s just not right”. We’re in the league, too. “Don’t worry about the name – (we’re) players and we work our butt off, too”.
“I don’t know if it’s about the name or what”.
Redskins are second in NFC East with a record of 4-6 from their first 10 matches of the season.
So while it may be far-fetched to claim that there’s an officiating conspiracy against Washington, it’s not hard to see that those involved with the Redskins organization feel guilty enough about the name that they’ll envision others acting out against it.
“I think everything was a little frustrated after the game”, Gruden said.
“I’m done being quiet”, Hatcher wrote on Instagram. Any blow above the shoulders today has a risk of being called unnecessary roughness. We’re players. We got a team, too. Terrance Knighton and Ricky Jean Francois both posted images of Culliver’s penalized hit, registering their dissent. Hatcher won’t want to hear this, either, but coming into Week 11, only four teams had been flagged fewer times than Washington, per NFL Research.
All teams get miffed at calls, of course, and plenty of outside analysts disagreed with the call against Culliver. To point the finger at an official for our loss yesterday probably isn’t right, because we lost by 30. So we’re not looking for excuses. “We can’t control refs, we can’t control those outcomes, but what we can control is our discipline and not holding, and not having those penalties, and saying, ‘What can we do better to not have them throw the flag?’ If we focus on that and what we can control, that’s where we put ourselves in the best position to have success”.
