Redskins acquire TE Carrier from 49ers
Carrier showed he has the ability to make the tough catch when he was given the opportunity last season.
The 49ers and Washington announced the agreement of the trade, which is pending a physical. After losing both Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen for the season, the Redskins were in desperate need of a tight end on the roster. He was released by Philadelphia on August 25, 2013, and subsequently signed to the 49ers practice squad on September 3. He entered the NFL having played wide receiver in college, but began the transition to tight end. Reed would be the starter, but he has missed the past two weeks with a strained hamstring. In 2014, he appeared in 11 games (one start) and registered nine receptions for 105 yards. Williams and Ernst Brun to come in and compete with holdovers Je’Ron Hamm and Chase Dixon.
The Sacramento Bee reported that the pick was a fifth-rounder in 2017 and conditional based on Carrier’s playing time and production.
As a senior, Carrier was also named the Wisconsin Coaches Association’s Private College Player of the Year. The Redskins signed two free agents last week in D.J. His cap hit for 2015 is $718,333.
Washington had a roster spot open after placing Silas Redd on injured reserve with a torn ACL and MCL. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee on Thursday and is out for the season.
The 49ers entered training camp with eight tight ends, and clearly was not going to be keeping all of them.
