Redskins ‘very comfortable’ signing Galette
“He has to walk the line, and he knows that”, McCloughan said Sunday.
Then on Friday, before the battle had gotten under way in earnest, the Redskins signed fifth-year linebacker Junior Galette, overlooking red flags about the veteran’s character in favor of his prowess as a quarterback-sacking machine. He was released by the Saints last Monday.
Galette was arrested in January after an alleged home dispute. However, Galette is now being investigated by the NFL for domestic violence, specifically for a video circulating that appears to show Galette hitting a women with a belt on a Miami beach.
“I didn’t just like the video in any respect, and as a matter of reality, once I noticed the video, it was scary”. I was telling him what I expect. “I wouldn’t mind taking on the challenge of helping him get on the right path”.
McCloughan is confident that a deal can get done but he realizes that the open market could be very attractive for Williams, a 27-year-old, three-time Pro Bowl left tackle who should be entering his prime seasons.
Gruden said he didn’t ask Galette’s coach with the Saints, Sean Payton – or other folks around the league – about the player. “That is why I needed to satisfy with him face-to-face”, McCloughan stated. “I felt actually, actually robust about it”.
“This guy”, McCloughan said, “we feel very comfortable bringing him on board”. Very comfortable.
The Redskins also contacted the NFL about its investigation of Galette, and McCloughan said he knows “there’s still a chance” the league will suspend the player.
“However we have been undoubtedly extra prepared to take an opportunity with that”, McCloughan stated, “understanding that he will be a Redskin and figuring out he will give us a whole lot of video games”.
A day before signing Galette, McCloughan, Allen and Gruden met with the player.
“We’ve all made mistakes or something”. I do not need the repeat offenders. “I will promise you guys this: being new here and knowing where we’re going and what we want to build, I’m not going to bring a bad guy in”.
In his first meeting with the media since signing Galette on Thursday, McCloughan said multiple people in the organization researched him. “I don’t want the guy that I know is not going to be a good guy and be in our locker room”.
