Refined carbs may up women’s depression risk
As the level of blood sugar increases, hormonal responses are targeting the lowering of blood sugar levels, whilst also affecting mood. The study found that high dietary GI scores along with the ingestion of added sugars and refined grains not only causes physical complications but increases the risk for mental complications in post menopausal females.

To come to that conclusion, researchers studied data collected from over 70,000 postmenopausal women. Carbohydrate consumption leads to a blood sugar level rise. This in turn would intensify mood changes in women as well as other symptoms of depression.
Researchers concluded that, “The results from this study suggest that high-GI diets could be a risk factor for depression in post-menopausal women”.
Eating foods rich in refined carbohydrates can potentially lead post-menopausal women to become more susceptible to new-onset depression, according to a new study conducted by the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). The participants have been reviewed in a 3-year follow-up interviews that contained information such as their dietary glycemic index, glycemic load, and the types of carbohydrates consumed by them.

It was found high-GI diets increased the risk of depression in postmenopausal women by 22%.

Although the study has been already acknowledged by most nutrition experts, experts think additional researches must be conducted to prove the validity of the experiment. A regular intake of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole-meal cereals, fish and nuts eliminates the risk of developing depression-like symptoms. The authors say further research is needed to see if similar results can be replicated in a larger population.
