Refocused: Houston Texans 13, Cincinnati Bengals 9
On Thursday night, the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback and TCU Rose Bowl icon tried to get it right as the offensively challenged NFL began Week 2 of the 2017 season with a Bengals-Houston Texans pairing fraught with football-watching peril.
After an offseason of insisting Tom Savage was his starting quarterback, Bill O’Brien made the quick switch in Week 1 in the hopes that Deshaun Watson would spark the offense.
Green said he believes he “could have made a lot of plays in the game” if given the opportunities, and the Bengals have to find a way to get their playmakers the ball: “It’s a superstar-driven league”. Plenty of controversy led up to this game.
While attempting to chase down arguably the fastest player on the field, Houston Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney got a chance to show off his own speed. Still, the team managed to get an ugly win, but a win nonetheless.
Deshaun Watson 15/24 125 yards. Watson looked special last night. “He has good command of the things we’ve done”. He’s thrown three touchdowns and seven interceptions.
DeShaun Watson wasn’t ideal but he made plays when he needed to and led the Texans to a much-needed win. Marvin Lewis loathes to put rookies in big spots early, but Mixon may be the thing the Bengals need to jump start the offense. It’s definitely not about flashy high powered excitement.
Clouds will also disappear as the game goes on, resulting in mostly clear skies by the second half. On paper, Watson appears to be the logical choice given the porous condition of the Texans offensive line. Nothing flashy from the young linebacker in his first start, but he was flying to the ball.
O’Brien will more than likely make his decision just before game time. Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther figured O’Brien’s gameplan out rather quick and it probably wasn’t too hard. At Clemson, Watson played in back-to-back national championship games, winning one.
Meanwhile, Watson enters as the favorite to get the nod to start. No one foresaw that coming. “It’s something that you’re constantly working with the quarterbacks on and we still work on it and always will”.
The offensive line continued to disappoint last night. He has been sacked eight times and has a QB rating of 47.2.
After Thursday’s game, he said he had to check if his finger was still attached. Geno Adkins had a brilliant game, with two of the Bengals three sacks.
