Regina King, Uzo Aduba, Lady Gaga React To Big Golden Globe Nominations
Established stars and newcomers from as far afield as Sweden, Australia and Mexico as well as the United States were honoured with Golden Globe nominations yesterday for their work in movies and television.
The Globes ceremony will be hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais.
All five of FX’s nominations came from limited series “Fargo” and “American Horror Story: Hotel”, while three of PBS’s four nods were for “Wolf Hall”; HBO earned almost as many nominations from niche miniseries and TV movies (“Show Me a Hero”, “Nightingale”, and “Bessie”) as it did from more mainstream offerings (“Game of Thrones”, “Silicon Valley”, and “Veep”). “The Martian”, a box-office hit and a possible Oscar favorite, stands a better chance of winning best picture at the Globes as a comedy than as a drama, where the field includes Tom McCarthy’s acclaimed Boston Globe drama “Spotlight”, Todd Haynes” “50s romance “Carol” and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s frontier epic “The Revenant”.
With its two nominations, tiny broadcast outlet CW beat CBS’ single mention (for supporting dramatic actor Alan Cumming in “The Good Wife”) as well as NBC (which will air the Globes awardscast on January 10, but was completely snubbed on Thursday by the Globes).
– Actor, Drama: Bryan Cranston, “Trumbo”; Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Revenant”; Michael Fassbender, “Steve Jobs”; Eddie Redmayne, “The Danish Girl”; Will Smith, “Concussion”. Netflix’s Narcos was also nominated for best television series in the drama category.
“The Irish film industry boasts some incredible talent and it is great to see this recognised internationally”, said Arts Minister Heather Humphreys.
In the race for best comedy or musical film are The Big Short, David O. Russell dramedy Joy, space blockbuster The Martian, zany caper Spy and Amy Schumer’s breakout film Trainwreck. Not only did programming from cable/premium/streaming services dominate this year, they also shoved old-school networks aside in the comedy category.
It is the first time that Netflix has earned the most nominations and the first time in a decade HBO hasn’t.
The best actress in a TV series- comedy contenders are Rachel Bloom, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Rodriguez, Lilly Tomlin, Grace & Frankie, besides Louis-Dreyfus.
Those two companies have their own nominated comedies, too; in fact, the entire Comedy or Musical category is a testament to the advancement of streaming video.
– Animated Film: “Anomalisa”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “Inside Out”, “The Peanuts Movie”, “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.
At least screen veteran Sylvester Stallone, who was left out of Wednesday’s SAG nominations, earned a spot in the best supporting category for reprising his role as Rocky Balboa in “Creed”. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all was the Best Comedy nod for Hulu original series “Casual”, which made my 2015 top ten list and received positive reviews but was on no one’s awards radar. Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” (three nominations) and the Jennifer Lawrence-led “Joy” (two nods) also have yet to be released.
“On the other, it’s silly to ignore the profile boost that certain films and performances get from recognition on a highly-rated televised awards show”. “I’m nominated as an actress for a Golden Globe what a dream is this real!” But the surprisingly robust showing at the Globes on Thursday morning doesn’t hurt.
