Reid confronts fellow Democrat over ethics allegations
But Grayson appeared to link Reid to other top Democrats, saying he is “their attack dog, that’s what it comes down to”.
The outburst prompted a Reid staffer in the room to bring in the senator’s security detail, who stood inside the door during the rest of the meeting as a precaution.
U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid had a heated exchange Wednesday at a congressional meeting, with Grayson confronting Reid over his remarks on Grayson’s ethics investigation and Reid “express [ing] his low opinion of Congressman Grayson to his face”.
Reid has endorsed Grayson’s Democratic opponent in the Florida Senate primary, Rep. Patrick Murphy. Pat Murray, D-Wash., bottom, shades his eyes from glare as he speaks to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, May 10, 2016.
It’s just the latest explosion of both Grayson’s war with the Democratic establishment and the Senate candidate’s notorious temper.
Instead of letting bygones be bygones or clearing the air with Reid, Grayson channeled the spirit of Heisenberg.
“I asked him a couple of times, ‘What is your basis for making that statement?’ and he couldn’t come up with anything more than, ‘I want you to lose, ‘” Grayson said in an interview with The Associated Press.
Witnesses say Reid was speaking to the Congressional Progressive Caucus when Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida interrupted him, challenging statements Reid has made about Grayson.
Grayson’s confrontational approach was derided by Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), the leader of the CPC.
Grayson’s office quickly emailed a retort from the congressman: “I have a low opinion of Reid’s low opinion”. “The Progressive Caucus is a place to fight for progressive values, not fight for Alan Grayson’s narcissistic desire to hear someone say his name. Say my name”, Grayson said.
“Alan Grayson made a decision to be disruptive, to the embarrassment of his fellow colleagues”, read a blunt statement from Reid’s office sent to The New York Times.
“Calling out the Establishment is never easy, and it’s not always polite”.
While reportedly keeping his cool, Reid calmly responded, “I want you to lose”. I had a rare moment to challenge the lies that Sen.
Reid spokeswoman Kristen Orthman said the 76-year-old senator “took the opportunity” of Grayson’s interruption “to express his low opinion of Congressman Grayson to his face”.
