Reid Ewing: Yep, I’m Gay!
“After a few years of doing this, one day I decided I had to get cosmetic surgery”.
“Modern Family” actor Reid Ewing had this wry observation Monday: “Writes a cosmetic surgery article, people care more that I’m gay.”
But over the weekend, fans also learned that Ewing, 27, is gay.
The Modern Family actor, who recently opened up about his struggle with body dysmorphia, nonchalantly confirmed that he is gay in a Twitter exchange during which someone asked if he had just outed himself by complimenting another guy’s looks.
“I genuinely believed if I had one procedure I would suddenly look like Brad Pitt”, he wrote, explaining that one procedure turning in to another, and then another.
And so, he went to a doctor for his first cosmetic procedure: cheek implants. After the surgery, he says, “I woke up screaming my head off from pain, with tears streaming down my face”. The doctor fed into his distorted way of thinking, telling Reid that surgery would be “necessary” for his career as an actor.
After the article posted, he proudly went on Twitter and made a remark about Eugene Bata, another sufferer of body dysmorphic disorder, had how he connected with his article adding that he is “hot”.
Embarrassed by the results, he stayed in isolation, claiming people stared at him in public and that his parents thought he had contracted an illness. “For the next couple of years, I would get several more procedures with two other doctors”.
‘None of the doctors suggested I consult a psychologist for what was clearly a psychological issue… or warn me about the potential for addiction’.
“All the isolation, secrecy, depression and self-hate became too much to bear”, he continued. He said he wished he could go back and undo all the work he’d had done, because he realizes now he didn’t need any of it. It’s a awful hobby, and it will eat away at you until you have lost all self-esteem and joy. “Now I can see that I was fine to begin with and didn’t need the surgeries after all”, he wrote.
