State District Judge Wayne Salvant said he understood prosecutors’ concerns that Couch might flee again, but that the charge against her, while a third-degree felony, wasn’t serious enough to merit a $1 million bond.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Ms. Couch now is in Tarrant County jail, charged with hindering apprehension, with a bail of $1 million.

She was detained in Los Angeles on a no-bail hold for Texas authorities after being deported from Mexico last week. But Salvant said Friday he would not rule on that motion until a previously scheduled hearing Monday.

Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson told reporters at a news conference that Couch had complained about the conditions of her jail cell, to which he responded by saying it “is a jail, not a resort”.

Tonya Couch appeared in a yellow jail jumpsuit in her first court appearance Friday morning and told District Judge Wayne Salvant she understood the charges against her.
