Reliance Jio to telcos: Have fulfilled all licence requirements; give connectivity

Reliance Industries asked incumbent telecom service providers to provide adequate interconnect points in their network to ensure calls from Jio subscribers go through to their users, and said it will begin reporting operator-wise call failures on its website. “Domestic voice calls to any network across the country, both local as well as while roaming nationally, will be completely free for Jio subscribers forever”, Jio said.

“We see a good amount of migration happening from the current incumbents till the free period, or December 31, as Indian consumers are price-sensitive”, KPMG partner Jaideep Ghosh said in an interview.

Rajan Mathews, director general of GSM industry body Cellular Operators Association of India, however, put on a fearless face, saying with Jio’s offer the battle lines are drawn, and incumbents Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular will doubtless match the rates to retain their mid-to high-end customers.

During its launch on Thursday, Ambani had said “Jio will fulfil Digital India dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.

Almost 20 brands including Sony, Sansui, Videocon, LG, Samsung, Micromax, Panasonic, Asus, TCL, Alcatel, HTC, Intex, Vivo, Gionee, Karbonn and Lava were part of the preview offer which provided free 90-day unlimited calls and high-speed mobile broadband trials to 4G smartphone users of these brands. Later user will receive Unique Porting Code from 1901 which can be used for him to port his number easily to other network; this unique number is valid till 15 days only.
