Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced farmers will receive $3.2 billion in grants, subsidies, and loans from the government in a bid to spur sluggish growth.
While addressing to Kisan Convention in Islamabad, the PM unveiled the package which provides subsidy to farmers on fertilizers and pesticides and supporting them in different fields of agriculture sector following slump in commodity prices.
The Prime Minister announced that the relief package has been divded in four parts.
The agriculture relief package was announced at Kissan Convention in Islamabad after approval by the federal cabinet today (Tuesday).
He also noted that recent floods and rains have caused huge losses to cotton growers.
The prime minister revealed that the federal government has already started working on the construction of several dams, including Diamer-Bhasha, Dasu and Bunji dams, to provide ample amounts of water and power to the nation.
The reforms and grants will primarily target small farmers, classified as those with holdings of 12.5 acres or less. Hence, the government has come to a decision that it will give cash assistance of five thousand rupees to the cotton grower on the outline of rice farmers.
Interest-free loans will be provided to farmers who own 12.5 acres or less land for the installation of solar-powered tube-wells or conversion of existing tube-wells to solar system.
He urged the farmers to adopt progressive farming to increase agricultural productivity and their income.
