Spotify reported that plays of Bowie’s back catalogue jumped a whopping 2700% after news of his death broke globally. Still, encountering the Bowie persona without a frame of reference that could easily make sense of what he was doing put me at a disadvantage in the early 1970s when “Ziggy Stardust”, “Aladdin Sane” and “Diamond Dogs” first enthralled my small circle of friends.
Tributes poured in for the singer after the announcement of his death.
Tributes flowed in from popular music stars, including the Rolling Stones, Madonna, rapper Kanye West and Paul McCartney.
I had had my own problems, cutting through a forest of red tape to get the green light to photograph at the gig. The self titled reprise, “I can’t give everything away”, is more celebratory than morose.
Sir Paul referenced the part his music has played in British musical history, writing on his blog: “I’m proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world”.
Jagger posted on his Facebook page: “David was always an inspiration to me and a true original”.
