Remembering the last time David Wright came back from injury in Philadelphia
Wright returned to the New York Mets’ lineup Monday night after missing more than four months with a back problem. In 2011, Wright missed nine weeks because of a stress fracture in his back – perhaps a precursor to the spinal stenosis – but immediately went on a 10-game hitting streak upon his return, batting.
Wright has played in only eight games this season while dealing with back and shoulder issues and he is finally ready to return. Wright will still be the primary third baseman, but he will get regular rest to ensure he stays healthy down the stretch. New York (67-56) holds a five-game lead over the Washington Nationals in the NL East and the club will receive a major boost if Wright can get back on track quickly. The team has added Yoenis Cespedes, Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe at the trade deadline and that takes some pressure off Wright as he makes his return.
Manager Terry Collins placed Wright in the cleanup spot against the Philadelphia Phillies in the captain’s first major league game since April 14.
All those signs point to the Mets being this year’s “team of destiny”.
But with the Mets throwing three righties at the Phillies, the pair should see plenty of play throughout the series. “He looks good. He’s feeling good”.
Wright hit. 321 (9-for-28) with one RBI, five walks and six strikeouts in eight games during a rehab assignment with Class A St. Lucie.
Wright, 32, was batting.
“It’s a huge four games for us”, catcher Cameron Rupp said.
“I’m excited”, Wright said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed winning so I’m going to do everything I can to help this team win and kind of take that next step”. “It’s an exciting thing and something as a player you dream about, especially having gone through how long it’s been since we’ve put ourselves in this position. And we’ve got to play every game and play it well”. And he needs to figure out when he doesn’t feel well enough to play, “to be really honest about where maybe I wasn’t in the past”.
