‘Remo Fernandes has Portuguese nationality’
After confirming that the well-known singer Remo Fernandes holds a Portuguese passport, Agacaim police has now written to the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) of the Goa police requesting it to serve summons to Remo through the Indian Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal.
Remo has been summoned by the Goa Police, asking him to appear before the investigating officer this evening (around 4 PM) after he failed to do so on Monday on account of his Europe trip.
The FIR was filed under the Goa Children’s Act, a special legislation specifically dealing with crimes against children in Goa.
The 62-year old singer, famous worldwide, is accused of threatening a minor girl at Goa Medical College and Hospital where she was being treated after being hit by a vehicle driven by Remo’s son Jonah.
According to the complainant, the minor girl (from Malvan-Maharashtra) was verbally abused by Remo at the GMC on December 3. “We have issued fresh summons (to Remo) to remain present on December 23”.
He also mentioned the Subject of the letter as “Portuguese national Luis Remo de Maria Bernardo Fernandes alias Remo Fernandes”. “I have now told Panaji SDPO to find out all the details”, said SP Gaonkar.
“I have documents that reveal that Remo acquired Portuguese citizenship on May 21, 1993 while he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2007”, lawyer Aires Rodrigues said. “We’ll come to know about it once a proper enquiry is conducted”, said the SP. Sources at Agassaim police station confirmed that the girl in her statement stated that Remo had abused her at GMC where she is presently undergoing treatment.
The Mapusa police in north Goa earlier registered an offence of rash and negligent driving against Mr. Jonah Fernandes under Sections 279 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code.
