Ren Qian: 15-year-old wins Olympic diving gold for China
She scored 439.25 after five dives.
Qian Ren and Yajie Si continued China’s fine showing in the diving events of the 2016 Summer Olympics, taking the top two spots in the women’s 10-metres platform final.
Ren started inauspiciously before posting scores of 94.05, 91.20 and 91.20 with her final three dives.
Teammate Ren Qian finished second overall Wednesday, as her five dives netted her 385.80 points.
Canada’s Meaghan Benfeito (389.20) won her third Olympic bronze, after the 27-year-old also finished third in the sychro event.
Si made it as Chinese one-two, as she achieved a final score of 419.40 points to seal the silver medal.
The last diving event here – the men’s 10m platform final – will be staged on Saturday. “I am quite tall for my age, but I will continue to work hard and press on with my training”, she said.
“When I was a little kid, I always had a dream of diving,”she said”.
Si led the way in both the preliminaries and the semifinals, but she finally wobbled a bit in the fourth round.
“Ren had a wonderful final, Si said”.
“It does feel a lot different”, she said. With the win, Maroulis is the first American woman to win an Olympic wrestling gold medal.
“It’s a very different sensation”, Ren said, looking down at the gold medal around her neck.
Just 19.85 points separated Ren from 17-year-old Si, who had tied with her teammate on the first dive but later faltered slightly behind on her subsequent attempts.
“They’re incredible divers”, Parratto said.
The top 12 divers in the semifinals will advance to this afternoon’s finals.
The forecast for rain didn’t pan out, however, so there were no weather-related issues at the first Olympic diving competition held outdoors since 1992.
Of the Hoosiers’ eight medals at the Rio Olympics, six are in swimming, one in diving and one gold by Canadian high jumper Derek Drouin. “I did pretty well, but it wasn’t flawless, based on what I expect of myself”.
