Renault present auto and team for 2016
Former McLaren driver, Kevin Magnussen, has been called to replace Pastor Maldonado, while young Jolyon Palmer, a 2014 GP2 champion, will fill up the other available seat.
Renault Sport Racing and Renault Sport Cars will work hand in hand to maximise technical and commercial synergies from track to road.
Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault Group confirmed the team would be named Renault Sport F1 and would continue in their partnership with Infiniti, whose name would be seen on the RS16’s livery.
The Renault team also took the opportunity to confirm its driver line-up for the 2016 season. Renault Sport Racing is headed by board member Jérôme Stoll as president, supported by Cyril Abiteboul as managing director. The company says that this new entity “will manage the development and commercialization of the Renault Sport auto portfolio”, adding that “Renault Sport will develop its worldwide footprint, brand appeal and portfolio growth with increased R&D investment”.
The arrival of a brand new vehicle for a brand new team in Formula One is already special.
“We have won in F1 as a team and as an engine supplier”, he said.
Meanwhile, Bob Bell will serve as the team’s Chief Technical Officer while Nick Chester serves as Chassis Technical Director and Rémi Taffin as Engine Technical Director.
Renault came under fire last season for an unreliable and uncompetitive power unit by Red Bull and Toro Rosso, with both teams opting to change engine set-ups for 2016. The Nissan-owned brand was involved with Red Bull F1 as technical partner since 2011.
It has rebranded the Lotus marque – one of the sport’s most famous names – and on Wednesday unveiled a black team livery and new driver lineup.
The Renault Sport Academy was also officially announced, with the double objective to find emerging talent that can be brought to Formula One and to provide an opportunity for Renault’s markets to take an active role in the construction of tomorrow’s sporting performance through promoting and following their local drivers.
