Rep. John Lewis’ book sales skyrocket after Trump Twitter attack
Georgia Democrat, Lewis, who commented on 13 January that he did not see Trump as “legitimate” due to Russian hacking in the U.S. election, today bore the brunt of the president-elect’s wrath.
Others ridiculed Mr Trump’s characterisation of Mr Lewis’ district, which is majority African-American and encompasses three-quarters of Atlanta, as “horrible”, “falling apart” and “crime infested”.
In a series of early morning tweets Saturday, Trump responded, saying Lewis should pay more attention to his congressional district and stop “falsely complaining about the election”. Do you plan on trying to forge a relationship with Donald Trump?
Trump’s defenders argued that Lewis’ civil rights pedigree does not put him above criticism for remarks they believe are out of line. “It will be hard”.
Trump’s tweets come after Lewis told NBC News in an exclusive interview Friday that he does not view Trump as a legitimate president. Trump has repeatedly rejected suggestions that hacking by Russian Federation or other actors helped him win the presidential election.
Donald Trump is on the war path yet again, and this time around the subject of the President Elect’s ire is civil rights legend John Lewis.
“John Lewis is an American hero”, Richmond said.
He is also one of a handful of House Democrats who have said they will boycott the inauguration, which is normally a celebration of bipartisanship.
Lewis is the author of a graphic novel series called “March”.
Todd asked Lewis to explain his position. He was beaten by police during a march he helped lead in 1965 in Selma, Alabama, drawing attention to hurdles for blacks to vote. Ben Sasse, one of the most vocal Trump critics in the GOP, who wrote that the inauguration isn’t about Trump but “a celebration of peaceful transfer of power”.
There have been few Democrats who have attacked Trump this directly. He pointed to a “conspiracy” on the part of the Russians to help Trump get elected.
