Rep. Reed Says House Should Take Time With Speaker Election

The fact that he is giving up his seat is a significant victory for conservatives who want to change how the federal government is run and funded, according to the SunHerald.

A group of about 30 House conservatives have said they won’t support any spending bill that funds Planned Parenthood.

Reed said that Speaker John Boehner’s decision to resign his seat in Congress at the end of October came as a surprise to him.

Speaker Boehner and the man who wants his job, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, was here on Special Report.

He also pledged to “lead the fight for our conservative principles and make our case to the American people”, while incorporating a sense of inclusion about the leadership team.

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters that he and Boehner would also begin discussion on a two-year budget compromise. “We’ve spent late nights on the House Floor together”. When Tapper pressed further, McCarthy said again, “I feel very good where I’m at”.

In a brief interview, Gowdy sought to tamp down the talk.

“I think he did the right thing, ” Fleming said. And I’m not talking about the House Freedom Caucus radicals this time. Boehner was willing to do that if it meant forcing President Obama to take the public stand of a veto on a stand the Republicans supported, but not if it meant yet another government shutdown.

The timing of Boehner’s resignation makes it more likely that a temporary budget resolution can be passed while the House works out its leadership. Conservatives on and off Capitol Hill served notice that they would not settle on the status quo from their leaders even as Democrats and a few more moderate members warn the result could be more crisis and gridlock.

A hallmark of the Boehner speakership-and one of the reasons he cited for leaving the post early-was the contentious relationship he had with members of his own conference.

Fleming said Friday he didn’t know whom he would support for speaker, but that he was looking for someone who would be a voice for conservatives on policy and tactics.

McConnell spoke as the Senate wraps up a debate he engineered on a temporary spending bill that would keep the government open while the negotiations stretch through the fall.

Republicans have long targeted Planned Parenthood, and the group’s top official appeared before a House panel on Tuesday to defend it in the wake of videos released this summer that raise questions about its practices in providing fetal tissue for scientific research.

“This bill hardly represents my preferred method for funding the government, but it’s now the most viable way forward after Democrats’ extreme actions forced our country into this situation”, McConnell said Tuesday.
