Reporter patted down, turned away from Pence rally
DelReal tried to get credentialed as a journalist for the event but couldn’t, because the Trump campaign had revoked the Post’s credentials in June.
Officials say the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department was requested by the Secret Service to assist with a security detail at the Waukesha County Expo grounds for the Pence campaign event.
The incident, first reported by The Washington Post, was confirmed by company spokeswoman Kristine Coratti Kelly. Trump said that when he suggested at a news conference in Doral, Florida Wednesday morning that Russian Federation release emails that went missing after being stored on Clinton’s private email server, he was clearly being ironic.
DelReal then tried to enter via the general-admission line, as Post reporters have done without incident since Trump last month banned the newspaper from his events.
“It sounds like they misinterpreted what they were supposed to be doing”, the official said.
A Washington Post reporter was barred Wednesday from entering Mike Pence’s first public event as the Republican vice-presidential nominee and was patted down by local county deputies.
A security official told the reporter that he was not able to come to the event with his cell phone and laptop, and when DelReal asked if other attendees came in with their cellphones, the unidentified security official said, “Not if they work for The Washington Post”.
When DelReal returned in line, security personnel called two Waukesha County sheriff’s deputies who patted down DelReal’s legs and torso, seeking his phone, the reporter said.
DelReal was escorted out and was not permitted to speak to a campaign press representative.
Post executive editor Martin Baron says reporter Jose DelReal was subjected to bullying. The harassment of an independent press isn’t coming to an end.
“Our events are open to everyone, and we are looking into the alleged incident”, Pence press secretary Marc Lotter later said in a statement.
Donald Trump’s campaign has denied press credentials to a number of disfavored media organizations, including The Washington Post, but on Wednesday, the campaign of his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, went even further.
