Republican Congressman Cancels Hearing About Trump’s Ties With Russia
Rep. Walter Jones, a Republican from North Carolina, told The Hill Tuesday that Nunes should recuse himself from leading the investigation.
Sean Spicer angrily dismissed inquiries about the matter Tuesday, declaring that “every single person who’s been briefed on this, as I’ve said ad nauseam from this podium. have been very clear that there is no connection between the president or the staff here and anyone doing anything with Russian Federation”. “Certain actions by the chairman have hurt the crediblity of the committee”.
“You know for an administration who started by saying that there had never been any contacts with Russian Federation, an administration where you had a candidate, now a president, who continues to compliment [Russian] President Putin.to have all of these actions sure doesn’t do much to remove the cloud that is increasingly getting darker over this administration”, Warner said.
Chuck Schumer, Senate Democratic leader, called for the removal of Nunes on Monday.
“I believe chairman [Nunes] should recuse himself from involvement in investigation/oversight of Trump campaign & transition”, Schiff said in a statement Monday. Asked whether Nunes should step aside and if he knew the source of the surveillance, Ryan said, “No and no”. “I understand that people have to play different sides”. The retired general briefly served as Trump’s national security adviser. “So where do we go now?”
Rep. Devin Nunes, the Republican who heads the House Intelligence Committee investigating whether the Obama Administration wiretapped Donald Trump and his transition team, has cancelled all scheduled committee meetings, putting the investigation into suspended animation.
After holding a press conference about his surveillance claims, Nunes briefed Trump, whose team is also under FBI investigation for alleged ties to Russian officials who may have interfered in the 2016 US election. That particular event will feature testimony from cybersecurity experts, and future hearings might well feature individuals in the Trump campaign orbit, such as Paul Manafort, Roger Stone and Jared Kushner.
“This is done because the White House wanted it to be done”.
The Senate Intelligence Committee will hold its first hearing into Russian interference Thursday.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said a bipartisan “select committee” must investigate alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation due to the many “unanswered questions” surrounding the issue.
Nunes reiterated Tuesday morning that he does not intend to step down.
He faces criticism for not telling Schiff about the White House visit.
Nunes briefs Trump before Schiff, despite Trump being a potential subject of the committee’s investigation. Nunes says that meeting didn’t involve anyone from the Trump administration, but it would have been hard for him to have gotten into the White House without help from a staffer.
Dent stopped short of saying that the House committee should end their investigation.
On Tuesday, Nunes declined to say if the White House had asked him to cancel the hearing.
In addition to the White House itself, the grounds include an adjacent building with offices for National Security Council and other executive branch employees.
