Republican debate returns to Trump’s wall
Kasich wasn’t the only one, however.
Gov. Chris Christie missed out on being seen by almost 9 million viewers Tuesday night by being bumped from the prime time fourth GOP debate.
Jeb Bush and John Kasich sharply attacked Donald Trump for wanting to deport illegal immigrants. It hurts Jeb Bush, whose campaign is in trouble. “Why does she keep interrupting everybody?”, Trump said of Carly Fiorina. The Clinton name was mentioned almost 30 times in the prime-time debate, including a couple of shoutouts for Bill Clinton.
The lower numbers shows that being booted from the main stage was a significant setback for the governor, who received good reviews for his performance against former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Louisaina Gov. Bobby Jindal and former U.S. Sen.
The divide among GOP presidential candidates on immigration comes as both Speaker Paul D. Ryan and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have declared a legislative overhaul dead while President Barack Obama is in office. A few of the more enlightening exchanges among the Republicans will likely reverberate when Democrats take the stage at Drake University.
Trump, Rubio and most of the other GOP presidential candidates were campaigning in Iowa, New Hampshire and SC, all states with early contests. Trump has been reluctant to dive into specifics of policy so far in his campaign, a potential problem in a debate that focused mainly on just that.
“We’re a country of laws”. (How it makes sure respondents watched the debate, I’m not sure). “Only 19.8 percent of black teenagers have a job, who are looking for one. But, you know that”. “An economic theory is fine, but you know what?”
The Democratic candidates have all called to raise the minimum wage. Sanders and O’Malley want to push the level to $15 an hour.
Trump initially dodged the question, saying he thought “they are all challengers”.
(Paul) “Can I finish with my time?”
So Who Won The Debate?
“That’s the way I’ve been trained to do it, so now I’m learning the new art of acknowledging the question, being respectful of the questioner of course and then answering what’s on my mind”, he added. Instead of moderators who sniped with irrelevant questions, the candidates talked about their views on the issues.
This would be slightly down from the third debate on CNBC, the NBCUniversal business network, two weeks before – which pulled in 14 million last month, and a record for that channel. In general, they are against many things.
The status quo is not as good for Bush, the onetime establishment favorite now clinging to his political life. His best moment was when he stood accused by Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky of wanting to spend too much on defence. However, he might have benefited from the opportunity to shut down questions about his personal financial history. Yet both men, in expressing support for a comprehensive immigration overhaul, embraced a position that is unpopular with Republican primary voters, many of whom agree with Mr Trump’s harsh rhetoric about immigrants. Other candidates had varying degrees of success, but not to the point of shaking up the race.
Cruz called the Tuesday debate “productive” because it allowed voters to begin seeing clear and meaningful policy distinctions between the candidates.
