Republican field expected to grow on Monday with Walker’s entry
“Matt and I aren’t necessarily changing his stances on any issues”, said 19-year-old Alex Walker, sitting next to his 21-year-old brother Matt on the lakefront of the Wisconsin governor’s mansion. It’s both live and deleted until you open your Twitter app!
The next several months will be a critical test for Walker.
The Walker team responded to the accident by saying, “Stay tuned for Governor Walker’s announcement on Monday at 5pm Connecticut”. He shattered state fundraising records, collecting $83 million for his three Wisconsin elections, much of it coming from outside the state.
“In the Republican field, there are some who are good fighters”.
“He’s on his way to being president of Iowa”.
“The path for a Republican to win the presidency comes through the Midwest”, Walker told a crowd in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in April.
“It is a deficit or at least a threat that he has to be prepared to make up for”, said Charles Franklin, who has followed Walker for years and is director of the Marquette University Law School Poll in Wisconsin.
“Since Republicans took control in 2011, Wisconsin’s budget has ballooned by more than $10 billion, yet funding for our schools is down more than $200 per student with more cuts on the way this year”.
Democrats have for months been sharpening their political attack on Walker and his announcement. In the end, we got closer. It’s out. Introducing, the official campaign logo. He faced sharp criticism for a speech in February in which he said his experience taking on thousands of protesters in his state during his battle with unions has prepared him to confront terrorists overseas.
On immigration, Walker has moved from his support for a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants to declaring he is not in favor of amnesty and, at times, even sounding protectionist as he questioned the country’s approach to legal immigration.
Walker has flip-flopped on many other issues since he chose to seek the presidency.
Others still need some convincing. Yet before Friday, he hadn’t formally declared it himself.
Bush’s extensive fundraising network, founded on decades-old family friendships, will be hard to compete with. Grebe has served as chairman of Walker’s gubernatorial political committee since 2010.
Walker, a Republican who built a national profile largely due to his clashes with labor unions, also released a campaign video at the same time declaring his entry in the race.
