Republican presidential candidates discuss education at N.H. summit
And as the last candidate of the day to speak, Chris Christie, known for saying that teachers unions need to get punched in the face, continued to use that expression while discussing unions. He says, “it wasn’t just about unions”.
Meanwhile, Kasich has climbed to within striking distance nationally, and is locked in a virtual tie with Bush in the latest New Hampshire poll. But he also lauded his overhaul of the state’s 100-year-old teacher tenure law and the inclusion of merit-based pay increases in the Newark teachers’ contract – things he did with the support of the unions. Bush said he didn’t expect Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, which has already endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton, to change.
However, Christie has said the state will keep administering a test, called PARCC, which relies on some Common Core principles.
Common Core was developed by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. “And when something doesn’t work that we try, we then have to change it”.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal isn’t backing off from his criticism of Common Core math standards despite pushback from the moderator of an education forum in New Hampshire. Conservatives have charged that the Common Core standards were developed by the federal government and “extreme leftists”, but the federal government wasn’t involved in the standards, which were developed largely by governors and state school officials.
Whether the review will jettison Common Core or only make modest adjustments remains unclear.
“We should have very little tolerance for failure”, he said. (The Obama administration’s Race to the Top school grants competition did give points to school districts that have standards, though, any standards, not necessarily the Common Core.). He also says parents should be able to understand the work their children are doing. Oh, so the Republicans want to kill education.
“It’s thrilling because it brings a seriousness back to the process, which sometimes feels like entertainment – especially at this particular moment, given one of the candidates – that I think people really appreciate”, she said. “It needs to be about real accountability, school choice, high standards”. Inside, the rented air conditioning unit for the Londonderry High School gym struggled to cool off the sweating candidates and rapt crowd. To his fellow teachers, he says, “I’m not the villain, and you’re not the villain”. He was once a big-time supporter but announced at a campaign rally that after having commissioned a panel to study the education standards, he would pull New Jersey out of Common Core. These groups are planning a similar forum with presidential candidates in Iowa later this year.
“I actually have a thinking, operating brain”, Christie said.
The former Florida governor said he opposes Donald’s Trumps plans to deport millions of immigrants who are in the country illegally and to end birthright citizenship.
