Republicans in Wild West presidential showdown in Nevada

The results showed that 19% of Bush supporters said they’d switch their support to Rubio while 16% said they’d go to Kasich, 12% to Cruz, 11% to Trump, and 9% to Ben Carson.

Cruz fired back, accusing Trump of consistently vacillating on issues and saying his insults showed how rattled he was.

Mr Rubio, who has received a flood of endorsements from fellow lawmakers who see him as the mainstream candidate who can topple Mr Trump, for his part urged registered Republicans in Nevada to turn out in force for the caucus.

After wins in the SC and New Hampshire primaries, polls for Nevada caucuses have him once again firmly in the lead.

None of the GOP candidates, however, offered even mild criticism of the Republican who’d just won Nevada by 22 points.

Rubio sought to leverage his local roots in the state ― he lived as a boy with his family in Las Vegas for several years ― as well as reach out to the state’s burgeoning Hispanic population, most of which votes Democratic.

Another disappointing finish in Nevada would raise new questions about his viability heading into a crucial batch of Super Tuesday states on March 1, including his home state of Texas.

Nevada has 30 Republican delegates up for grabs. The door is open for Donald Trump to become the leader of a political party that doesn’t want him to win.

The poll, the Kasich campaign said in a statement, “serves as a stark reminder for Republicans who want to win the White House”.
