Republicans on Obamacare repeal: ‘We’re going to get it done’
A Republican plan backed by Trump to overhaul the US health-care system was pulled on Friday after it failed to garner enough support to pass the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
Democrats had celebrated what they thought was the demise of the repeal bill on Friday. Many in the party feared the politics of an enormous expansion of government and the disruption it would bring to the health care market.
Plus, notes health care expert Ed Haislmaier, Obamacare allows people to wait until they need medical care to enroll in coverage. “Are we actively planning an immediate strategy?” Ultimately our representatives in Congress felt this pressure and, in this case anyway, reflected the will of the people.
The lessons of last week may force the White House and Republicans to go for a less ambitious reform package.
That’s the least they could do for the American people. President Trump and his chief strategist Steve Bannon don’t understand that issuing ultimatums to members of Congress is a really bad idea. “If Republicans are clearly invested in your failure, as an insurer, you need to be concerned”, former G.O.P. Senate aide Rodney Whitlock told Axios.
A particularly helpful lever in her toolbox is the appropriations process – all of the coming budget and spending deadlines that could well exacerbate GOP divisions and cause Republicans to seek Democratic votes.
The fact remains, however, that House Republicans aren’t in a different position than they were on Friday. That is precisely the way democracy is supposed to work.
Republicans insisted that what was wrong with Obamacare is they moved too fast, ignored public opinion, dismissed congressional opposition, and ended up with a bad bill because of it. Republicans have done everything they criticized Democrats for and as Klein writes, “supercharged it”. There will be another Republican attempt to fix Obamacare. And we will all be better for it.
Because the Democrats would have offered up a legislation-stopping filibuster for any ordinary bill, House Republicans stuck to so-called reconciliation legislation that was focused on budgetary issues. Now I urge Sens. It would start taxing everything that American companies import, which is just another way of saying that every company that depends on imports, including big GOP donors like Koch Industries and Walmart, will be as opposed to it as can be.
“The people who were “yes” on the health care bill were reminding Paul this is something we promised and we got to push in that direction”, Womack said.
Others are forging ahead with their own plans. Remember that you are in office to serve your constituents. Critics have said the move would be too costly, but research has shown most US households would pay less than the current system of insurance premiums, deductibles and co-pays.
The failure of the health care bill represents a huge loss for House Speaker Paul Ryan and President Donald Trump, each of whom vowed to repeal and replace the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) as soon as possible.
But at the end of the day, the reason reform is a priority is that Medicaid is a awful way to deliver health care to low-income Americans. The Republican leadership has worked for years to undermine the Affordable Care Act. Why? Next, give them ample time to come up with a bill. It maintains a structure that confuses prepayment for routine health-care services with insurance against unlikely needs. That is because “Among Republicans, 62 percent of registered voters want reform efforts to continue, versus just 30 percent who think lawmakers should stop”. Yes, and proudly so. Even a Republican majority in Congress and a Republican President were not able to agree on new legislation to replace Obamacare.
Sadly, no state has suffered more under Obamacare than Arizona.
Ryan proclaimed, “We are going to work together and listen together until we get this right”.
“I am very disappointed”, Smucker said in a statement after the bill was pulled. Whether one opposes or favors the law, most people agree that the law is far from ideal. The health care system gets better.
If and when the Democrats come to Trump to make a deal on health care, they may suggest or even demand that, to fulfill his promise of delivering “insurance for everybody”, he join the burgeoning fight for single-payer medical insurance as seen in almost every other civilized country in the world.
