Republicans Send ACA Repeal to President’s Desk
Now, in what amounts to a symbolic move during an election year, Congress just passed a bill that repeals most of Obama’s signature health care law and defunds Planned Parenthood. The U.S. House passed the bill today.
Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-Alto, voted Wednesday to repeal Obamacare and to defund the abortion provider Planned Parenthood.
After more than 50 failed attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, often referred to as Obamacare, the GOP-controlled House was pass legislation that will undo the law.
“This legislation would rip health care away from 22 million Americans, and deny affordable reproductive care to millions of women”, said Peters after the vote.
More than 16 million people have gained health coverage since the law was enacted, according to government figures.
“I am pleased be voting in favor of this bill and sending it to the White House, so President Obama can show the American people where he stands”.
Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers critical of Obamacare seek to overturn the law on the grounds that it forces people to buy insurance they don’t want and may not need.
Republicans celebrated the passage of the bill with an enrollment ceremony Thursday, with leaders saying it fulfilled a campaign promise to voters who gave them control of both bodies of Congress in the 2014 elections.
It also would end taxes the law imposed to cover its costs.
Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton criticized the repeal legislation while leading GOP candidates applauded it. Ryan and other GOP leaders acknowledged it will take a Republican president to get rid of the law.
“Unfortunately, the legislation before the House today fails to provide an infrastructure for replacement and fails to address the rising costs of healthcare in Central New York and across our country”, Katko said. But they said that is the point.
H.R. 3762, passed in the House on October 23, 2015, puts major provisions on the ACA, essentially making the law unworkable by reversing several key tax and spending provisions. Every single health care plan on the exchange in South Dakota saw a double-digit rate increase this year – every single plan.
The measure also called for eliminating federal funding to Planned Parenthood, after a series of tapes generated controversy over the organization’s methods of fetal donation and procurement. She, too, accused Republicans of offering no alternative.
