Rescue underway for 17 miners stuck in underground elevator
Technical Rescue experts and equipment have been called to the scene to help rescue the workers, emergency officials said.
Mr Klein said the miners were not in danger.
They were raised to the surface at the Cargill Inc.’s mine in a rescue operation that has taken about 10 hours.
Seventeen workers are stuck 900 feet below ground in an elevator shaft at the Cargill Salt Mine in Lansing, according to reports.
Tompkins County Emergency Management officials say the miners have been trapped since late Wednesday night at the Cargill Salt Mine in Lansing, about 40 miles outside Syracuse.
A crane has been brought in to assist with extricating the miners, according to the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response.
Crews have given the miners heat packs and blankets to keep them warm while they wait to be rescued.
The rock salt mine is one of three operated by Cargill, with the other two being in Louisiana and Ohio.
