Residents In City Neighboring Flint Affected By Tainted Water
Several water drives brought in hundreds of thousands of bottles of water to be delivered to residents in Flint, Michigan.
FLINT, Mich. (AP) – Federal officials warned Flint residents Friday that water samples from more than two dozen locations have higher lead levels than can be treated by filters that have been widely distributed to deal with the city’s contamination crisis, underscoring the need for all residents to have their water tested.
“It’s really important that everyone get their water tested”, Weaver said.
In Iowa on January 18, Rubio said he had not been briefed on the crisis but he commented on the issue in New Hampshire on January 21.
Because Flint officials chose not to chemically balance the water’s pH level – a numeric scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of any aqueous solution, including water – Flint’s new H2O supply was overly acidic.
Snyder announced his plan to form an infrastructure commission to analyze the status of underground water pipes throughout the state.
The funds also will help the city with unpaid water bills and cover testing, monitoring and other costs.
“The worst part about the water is the bathing”.
The trouble with the water in Flint just doesn’t let up.
“It is a failure of the city officials, it is a failure of the county officials, it is a failure of the state officials and the men and women of MI have been betrayed”, he said.
At the federal level, legislation to address Flint’s water crisis was also likely as the U.S. Senate takes up a bipartisan bill on energy policy.
In the best case scenario, the state or federal government would now bend over backwards to replace Flint’s toxic water system and put in place the medical and social services needed to help poisoned children live as healthfully and normally as possible.
They say that given other issues with the water boil-water advisories, high levels of a disinfectant byproduct, complaints about smell and taste, and a General Motors plant’s decision to no longer use it because of rust it is unlikely that Snyder did not know earlier about its potential risks.
It’s hard to believe that some of the things people are experiencing are isolated incidents when you learn you’re not the only one who smells the odor or sees the color of the water or when you learn that someone else has developed a mysterious rash. The corrosive water lacked adequate treatment and caused lead to leach from old pipes – and there has since been much discussion about who should be held accountable.
In fact, they never did, and in any event, had all the power taken from them under the emergency manager rule. Snyder and the Republicans who control the state Legislature have said it’s too early to talk about wholesale replacement of the pipes.
