Residents near Paris attack locations are offering shelter using the hashtag
“Porte ouverte”, which translates to “open door”, is quickly overtaking Twitter, and although now it’s been overtaken by people tweeting in support, the movement is growing.
Several Paris Metro lines have been closed and French president Francois Hollande has declared a state of emergency for all of France and closed the borders. #PorteOuverte tweets have included the addresses of many Parisians while others have indicated that those needing help should direct message them for their addresses as their doors really are open. Parisians are using the hashtag on Twitter to signal they need a safe place to go, or can provide it to people on the street. A few offered places of worship as well.
Up to 100 people are understood to be held hostage at the venue where Eagles of Death Metal were due to play to a big crowd.
A shooting was reported at a restaurant near the 10th Arrondissement of the city, the Associated Press reports, and there was at least one explosion heard in the Stade de France north of the city. That hostage situation is now over.
Meanwhile, taxis in Paris reportedly turned off their meters to offer free rides home to anyone. “If you want maximum exposure, you do it like this, in the dark, when it’s scarier and more hard for police to act”. If you’re looking for or offering a safe location, use the hashtag-otherwise, you could be doing more harm than good.
