Trump’s visit began Thursday with a trip to Napoleon’s Tomb at Les Invalides, where he was given full military honors as he and Melania Trump met Macron and his wife, Brigitte.

At least for the moment, that role is Macron’s for the taking – and he may succeed in securing it. Twitter users appropriately lit up Trump’s mentions for the objectification of an important political figure.

The French were more restrained about Mr Trump’s comments. Nobody accused her of having sinister meetings with Russians.

In France, the jury was out as to Macron’s precise motives in inviting – and embracing – Trump for an impromptu visit this week.
In the span of one minute on Friday, the two leaders hugged each other and shook hands twice, in what looked for all the world like a literal implementation of Macron’s plan to engage with Trump.

Macron made a point of detailing both the long history of ties between France and America and the areas where he and Trump disagree as he hosted the US president for a Bastille Day visit. Trump’s brand of “America First” politics had unsettled some European allies.
The Paris visit, however, seemed to establish the inklings of a working relationship between these two seemingly incompatible figures.
Still, there are many points of contention, including the decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement.
The two men could be seen talking animatedly as US and French fighter jets roared overhead.
“When it comes to fighting terrorism, from day one, I can say that we’ve seen eye-to-eye and we are strongly determined to take necessary measures in order to root out terrorism and to eradicate it”, Macron said through a translator. Asked about the friend called “Jim” whom he cited on the campaign trail a year ago saying “Paris isn’t Paris anymore” because of the threat of extremism, Mr Trump rowed back and said the city was “going to be just fine” because France now has a “great” and “tough” president. But Merkel will be gone before they can cross paths.
