Retallick signs for Rebels in Super Rugby
The Melbourne Rebels have signed Irish global prop Jamie Hagan for two Super Rugby seasons, the franchise announced on Wednesday.
The tighthead, 28, previously played for Leinster, Connacht and London Irish and won an Ireland cap against the US in 2013.
“Growing up in Ireland, I have always watched Super Rugby on a Saturday morning and it has always fascinated me”, the 28-year-old said, according to the club’s website.
“Having played against the Rebels for a number of years, I’ve seen some real development; the style they play and the direction the Club’s heading is exciting”.
This week, the Rebels added depth to their forward pack with flanker Adam Thomson and lock Culum Retallick joining from Queensland and the Blues respectively.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Tony McGahan, Zane Hilton and the Rebels’ Rugby program, as well as playing alongside a squad of players who I’ve enjoyed coming up against, and really respected as opponents”.
Thomson said he had been impressed by the strides made by the Rebels since they were founded in 2010.
“Jamie is quality player and he has added to every environment he has been a part of”.
Thomson is also a veteran of 83 Super Rugby appearances for the Highlanders and Reds and can play anywhere in the loose forwards.
Hagan’s move came about at the instigation of Irishman Eoin Toolan, the Rebels’ performance analyst.
“Jamie’s playing experience in European Rugby, where the set piece is crucial, will bring a varied approach to the Rebels’ forward play and likewise he will find a different challenge for himself in Super Rugby”.
