‘Revenant’ leads 2016 Oscar nominations with 12, only white actors again
Seems there was only one slot for a sci-fi director, and it went to a man who has never been nominated in this category: “Mad Max’s” George Miller.
Inarritu was nominated for Best Director, giving him the chance to win two Oscars in a row for the same category.
For Best Picture, there were eight nominees.
They announced the nominees for Achievement in Cinematography are Carol, The Hateful Eight, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant and Sicario.
Last year, Academy Awards host Neil Patrick Harris opened the ceremony with this line: “Tonight we honor Hollywood’s best and whitest”.
Jennifer Lawrence is killing the game.
The best-picture nomination for “The Big Short” was one of five nominations received by McKay’s film, the most of any Louisiana-shot film this year. A handful of black actors and filmmakers were considered realistic contenders for a number of nominations this year, including Will Smith, for his turn “Concussion”; Idris Elba, for his supporting role in “Beasts of No Nation”; Coogler, for his direction of “Creed”; and director F. Gary Grey and his cast for the surprise hit “Straight Outta Compton”. It secured nods for film editing, original score, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects.
“American Hustle” earned her a best supporting actress nomination in 2014, and she returns to the best actress category this year with a nomination for “Joy”. It’s easy to say that the reason there weren’t more people of color among the nominees is because there weren’t enough performances or opportunities for more nods. Once again, #OscarsSoWhite was trending on social media.
Actors vying for the golden statuette for supporting roles include Christian Bale (“The Big Short”), Tom Hardy (“The Revenant”), Mark Ruffalo (“Spotlight”), Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies“) and Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”).
Your biggest surprise snubs: Michael Keaton in Spotlight, no Best Picture for Carol, no Best Director for Ridley Scott and, mostly, no screenplay nominations for either Aaron Sorkin (Steve Jobs) or Quentin Tarantino (The Hateful Eight).
The Oscars have also faced criticism in recent years for focusing on art-house content over blockbusters.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was not excluded from the nominations.
On the other hand, such crowd-pleasing performers as Damon, Stallone, DiCaprio and Lawrence got selected in the performing categories.
And “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, your best picture snub will be healed by that billion in box office. However, Williams would need 10 more nominations to top the overall record holder.
Disney’s live action adaptation of Cinderella also got a nomination for Costume Design.
“Inside Out” is the ninth animated feature to receive a Writing nomination.
In addition, “Straight Outta Compton”, the biopic of rappers N.W.A., seemed a strong prospect for a best picture nomination – after all, it’s up for the prestigious Screen Actors Guild Awards ensemble prize.
Pixar’s “Inside Out” and Charlie Kaufman’s “Anomalisa” lead the Best Animated Feature category, along with the Aardman stop-motion “Shaun the Sheep Movie”; from Brazil, “Boy and the World”; and the Japanese anime “When Marnie Was There”.
“Carol”, the tender portrayal of a female photographer who falls in love with a married older woman in the 1950s’ NY, boasted six nominations in total, though it failed to pull one for best picture or director Todd Haynes.
