Rex: “Belichick out-coached me” in 40-32 loss
As the Bills hurt themselves with penalties, the Patriots kicked a field goal at the beginning of the third quarter, and Brady then led the Patriots on a nine-play, 83-yard touchdown drive.
Now? Well, Sunday was one of the best games he’s ever played. “Our medical people will inform me, and then I will inform you”.
According to NFL.com, the Bills’ offense and quarterback didn’t fare much better. With the score 40-32 and 1:15 left on the clock, Taylor attempted one last tying touchdown, but a pass near midfield was intercepted by Logan Ryan, ending the game.
Gannon, the analyst, quickly corrected Harlan by saying that Cassel was just warming up Taylor, who hadn’t been on the field in awhile.
Though the Bills have a new owner, a new head coach, and a litany of roster changes, the Patriots still have Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. “Not-so-great coaching on my part”. Gronkowski was a huge factor in the game once again. He has 36 catches in four games against the Bills over the past two-plus seasons. The opener had a 43.8 rating. “They’re acting like it’s the Super Bowl”. To put the rating in more perspective, the Emmys on Fox Sunday night had a 4.5 local rating.
Still, Lewis is aware that, eventually, too many fumbles will land him in a not-so-happy place.
New England raced out to a 37-19 lead, but three fourth quarter touchdowns by the Bills gave Rex Ryan’s men hope.
The Bills 40-32 defeat to the Pats was one of the most frustrating losses in recent times, especially with everything that was at stake. “How in the world can (Brady) communicate with this noise?” asked Harlan. The Pats terrorized the Bills for most of the afternoon and still weren’t satisfied afterward. On offense, the Bills seemed to forget what worked for them on the first drive of the game.
Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw touchdown passes to Charles Clay, Robert Wood and Sammy Watkins, and also scored on a 7-yard run.
This, quite simply, needs to be dealt with, and is also up to Ryan to resolve.
New England appeared to put the game out of reach when they scored 13 straight points in the third quarter and built a 24-point lead.
(3) Bills defense. When assessing the Bills defense, there are some numbers to consider. If you have no poise, no focus, you get caught up in all the BS, that’s what they do. His life has changed dramatically since 2004, but one constant has been opposing teams gunning for the Patriots. A lot of them were gut-punches.
When the Bills needed to go vertical, Taylor wasn’t getting the job done.
“I was talking to him after and I said, ‘Danny, that was an unbelievable play.’ And he was like, ‘I didn’t even see the ball”.
The Missed Replays: However, CBS missed several key replays, including a holding call on Bills’ cornerback Ronald Darby that had Ryan fuming and continued a New England scoring drive.
The National Football League season is very much a marathon, even if the Bills treated Week 2 like the final sprint.
Stats of the Day: Gannon supplied them. Brady has already thrown for more yards and touchdowns than he did during the first two weeks of his record setting 2007 season. Chandler Jones had three of the Patriots eight sacks. Buffalo native Rob Gronkowski led all players with 113 receiving yards and added a 2-yard score. The Bills were both on multiple occasions and it had nearly as much to do with this loss as Brady’s brilliance.
“On the offensive side, we killed ourselves”, Taylor said. Just when the Bills had Gronk and Edelman covered, there the guy was. You didn’t have to have a Ph.D to realize it was a bad idea. It may have been a combination of the defense’s inability against Brady’s passing or Taylor’s inexperience. In some respects, that should tell you how tough it was to find players who stood out for the Bills on Sunday.
Not a good sign considering this 38-year-old looked like he could play until he’s 50.
