Rex Grossman works out with Falcons
Grossman will give Atlanta a veteran presence at the position and a steady option should Ryan go down to injury, though obviously the hope will be that he never actually sees the field. T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree have been competing for the job this summer, although one of them could be on the way out with Grossman coming on board.
Rex Grossman confirmed Wednesday he signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons, where he will be the backup to starting quarterback Matt Ryan. He last played in a regular-season NFL game in 2011 with the Washington Redskins, for whom he was a 13-game starter under current Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Coach Dan Quinn confirmed the team hosted a workout and physical for the quarterback in Atlanta on Tuesday.
“I loved Rex because he was so tough”, Shanahan said then, via ESPN’s Vaughn McClure. In 2006, Grossman played all 16 games and had 3,193 passing yards and 23 touchdowns – both career highs – as he led the Bears to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1985.
Grossman spent his first six seasons with the Chicago Bears.
Rex Grossman, if brought on, could benefit from being reunited with Shanahan.
“He didn’t mind the pressure on him”.
He was out of football in 2014 after being cut by the Cleveland Browns in the preseason. Grossman has completed 55 percent of his passes and has 56 touchdowns compared to 60 interceptions in his career and will likely have no impact this season if he does get a deal.
