Reynolds hits 2 homers, Rockies win 5-3 in slugfest
The previous record was five.
Colorado’s 5-3 win marked the first time a game has ever been decided by eight solo home runs. Colorado has hit three homers in an inning just nine times on the road.
The previous record was held by the Mariners and Angels when they combined for five solo home runs a year ago. The homer for Stanton was his first since May 24, and they were the first back-to-back homers of the season for the Marlins. Seeing the deflection, home plate umpire Ron Kulpa ruled the pitch a foul ball, a call that is not reviewable by instant replay, giving Story a second chance that he took advantage, hitting the next pitch into the stands for his 18th home run of the season.
Interestingly, Miami’s three runs also all came on solo shots, pushing the two teams to a new Major League Baseball record.
It marked Reynolds’s second home run of the contest and came off relief pitcher Brian Ellington, snapping a streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings by Miami’s bullpen in the past week.
There were no shortage of hits tonight either as the Rockies finished the night with 12 and the Marlins totaling up 7.
The Rockies’ Mark Reynolds and Miami’s Marcell Ozuna did half the damage, each hitting two of the blasts.
Ozuna then joined Reynolds by going yard again, taking De La Rosa deep in the fourth as well.
Colorado will begin a two-game series at the New York Yankees on Tuesday with RHP Chad Bettis (5-5, 5.63 ERA) taking the mound against RHP Ivan Nova (5-4, 4.77). Colorado managed just one hit Friday and two hits Sunday. Miami is also 2-6 in Nicolino’s last eight starts, and 5-1 in Nicolino’s last six starts against a team with a losing record.
Aledmys Diaz added an RBI single and Jaime Garcia (5-6) pitched into the seventh inning as the Cardinals got back on track following their first winless homestand of at least two series since 1983.
“That was different for sure and obviously they got the better of us on that”, Marlins manager Don Mattingly said.
“I don’t know how to explain it especially at this place, it plays so big at times”, Weiss said.
J.T. Realmuto homered, doubled and reached twice on infield singles, with his extra-base hits coming in run-scoring innings when Stanton also reached.
“I still don’t think we’re clicking on all cylinders”, Bour said.
Other than the obvious long ball in this game, it is noteworthy to mention that Paul Clemens made his Marlins debut, his first start in a Major League game since 2014 with the Astros. He is 8-4 with a 3.15 ERA in 14 starts.
De La Rosa, in his second start since returning to the Rockies’ rotation from a bullpen demotion, gave up just five hits.
