Rice says it regrets offense at band’s performance mocking Baylor
They don’t want to get off to a slow start against the Owls (0-3) in their first road game of the season.
With a controversial halftime performance, the Rice band isn’t letting people forget there are Title IX lawsuits pending against Baylor. Right now he’s on a pace comparable to his stellar freshman campaign in which he had 471 yards and five touchdowns in three games. Baylor did not play particularly well in the first half (more on that in just a moment). The Owls last victory over Baylor was 34-31 in 1992 in Houston, when both schools were members of the Southwest Conference.
Subtlety was not the Owls’ forte on Friday night.
“Standing up here, we’re 0-3, but all our goals are still intact”, Rice coach David Bailiff said. We’re playing every night of the week. Despite having a bevy of experienced running backs, Rice has netted less than 200 yards on the ground. Blake Lynch led in receiving with 95 yards and a touchdown in 6 catches while KD Cannon had 93 yards and a touchdown in 10 receptions. If Rice is to get any type of sustainable offense going someone else is going to have to step up, especially against Baylor, which now boasts the best defense (statistically speaking) in the Big 12. Against No. 1 Alabama’s vaunted defensive front last Saturday, Lamp had 40 pass block situations and “won” on 39 of those without surrendering a sack and just one quarterback hit. “We have got to find a way where they get their confidence back. We have running backs that are supposed to be out in a route that are staying in to protect”. Though, because of Baylor not fitting its M.O., he has taken on a secondary role as a possession receiver, hauling in 24 passes compared to 14 as a frosh. Winning their first two contests by an average of 37.5 points per game has left many still waiting to see what the 2016 Bears truly have to offer.
With a compacted fall schedule kicking off this weekend, Glenn Moore, in his 17th year as head coach of the Lady Bears, also finalized the team roster for the upcoming season.
“Obviously breaking the rushing record shows Shock is a real good player”, Baylor coach Jim Grobe said.
To help defend Cannon and Baylor’s other receivers, Rice will have the services of J.T. Blasingame. It’s the home opener and it should be the largest crowd of the season.
Baylor would tend to be a team I would be anxious about when it comes to having to give up 31 points. His son is the Bears’ offensive coordinator.
