Another area where some would like to see more assertive USA action is in the South China Sea, where Beijing has been creating artificial islands in waters where other countries have overlapping claims. American companies want access to China’s enormous market, but they increasingly chafe at new security rules that would force them to turn over private data.
Officials said the relationship between the US and China is complicated but it could be argued they are working together on a broader array of issues than ever before.
