Richt (145-51) ousted at Georgia

Virginia Tech may not have had the greatest season, but Frank Beamer’s retirement sparked a late surge and a celebration for the beloved coach’s career.

Fans set up a small tribute for Richt outside the team’s football facility. Fans flocked to Twitter and Facebook, not to voice their displeasure with Richt’s removal, but to honor the former coach.

When asked why the decision was made to part ways, McGarity said those decisions “would stay between Mark and I” and refused several times to answer the question directly.

If the Colts want to make a bold move this offseason that could pay off in a big way for them, hiring Richt could be the big step forward that they need to make. Beyond that, he said he’s not sure of his future plans, which might include a different role in the Georgia athletic department or possibly a coaching job at another school.

Richt addressed his future shortly after being dismissed on Sunday. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 9 in the preseason but have been unranked in the AP poll since mid-October.

Although the Bulldogs won nine games, they came up short against the three best teams on their schedule.

Richt said on Monday night’s call-in radio show, he’s been contacted “by about five schools”.

Smart, who is preparing for the SEC Championship game against Florida on Saturday, did not speak publicly to media members on Monday, and one of his players, Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland, said he hadn’t heard anything from Smart about another job. “From that perspective, we fell in need of our objectives”.

The coach is also a top pick for other jobs – and Richt’s firing has folks feeling that Herman’s interests to bigger and better things has been piqued. “I think when you win nine games, that’s a pretty good season, especially with the body of work that he’s been able to put together there for however many years he’s been there”. He held a winning record at 145-51 overall and 83-37 in the SEC. Georgia won the conference twice during his tenure (2002, 2005) which was enough for a Sugar Bowl invite, nothing more.

With the college football season slowly coming to an end, the number of coaching vacancies figures to rise over the next coming weeks.

“Mark’s record on the field was outstanding; however, his impact on college football goes well beyond the gridiron”, McGarity said.
